She is also passionate about fundraising. In 2007, along with the assistance
of her partners, nurses, and community volunteers, she began the first annual
Made for Shade fundraiser and foundation.
During this initial year, they raised over $15,000 to provide shade on public
school playgrounds. Every year, on the last Thursday in June, Made for Shade has a gourmet food and wine tasting event.
This event serves as the main fundraiser for the foundation. They have raised
nearly $50,000 in three years. Their goal is to provide shade to all of the area
school playgrounds, coupling this with sun precautions and education to decrease
skin cancer. She believes this goal will markedly decrease skin cancer in the
Black Hills of South Dakota.
